Tests and optimizations

Tests of thermal power generation equipment are conducted in order to determine performance characteristics such as:

The purpose of such tests is to determine the condition of equipment and its operating parameters or to verify if the parameters which were supposed to be obtained after overhauls or upgrades, are indeed obtained. Tests are carried out for power plants, including boilers, turbine sets and Balance of Plant equipment from the smallest power rating up to 500 MW.

Power plants

Comprehensive performance tests and operation tests of power plants to determine the condition of equipment and to determine which upgrades and overhauls would be the most beneficial, including determination of:

  • performance parameters, that is: efficiency of the cycle, total flow and flow rate of chemical energy in fuel, relative increase etc.,
  • start-up losses for the plant in various thermal conditions,
  • steam turbine-generator performance parameters (steam flow and heat flow, internal efficiency, electrical and thermal power output etc.),
  • auxiliary performance parameters (heat exchanger thermal efficiency, Total Temperature Difference of preheaters, tightness of vacuum equipment etc.).

 

Boilers

Performance and operation tests for all types of boilers used in utilities and industry power generation, including:

  • short test: determination of efficiency characteristics and heat losses,
  • full test: determination of efficiency characteristics and heat losses, temperature distribution in combustion chamber, distribution of heating surface thermal loading, tightness of combustion chamber and boiler pass, mass balance of air and flue gas, determination of flow resistance in air and flue gas line, gas and particulate emissions from the boiler, gas concentration tests in wall burner zone, assessment of selection and operation of auxiliaries (coal mills, ID and FD fans, precipitators, etc.),
  • start-up losses for various thermal conditions,
  • combustion process optimisation.

Turbine – generators sets

Performance tests and field tests in order to determine the condition of steam and gas turbines in power generation and industry, including:

  • characteristics of total flow and flow rate of steam to the turbine as well as total heat flow and heat rate of the steam turbine-generator,
  • characteristics of turbine internal efficiency, efficiency of the steam turbine-generator and the entire cycle,
  • mass balance of steam and water in the turbine, in the regeneration system, extractions and cold condenser,
  • turbine thermal balance,
  • steam pressure and temperature distribution in the turbine, regeneration system and process extraction system,
  • performance parameters for regeneration system preheaters, DH (hot) condenser and cold condenser,
  • dynamic condition of the turbine-generator set,
  • start-up losses for various thermal conditions.

AUXILIARIES

Performance tests and field tests in order to determine the condition and verify the selection of auxiliaries for boilers and turbine-generator sets such as:

  • pumps (feedwater pumps, DH pumps, cooling pumps etc.) to the extent agreed with the Customer, in particular determination of hydraulic, power and efficiency characteristics of the pumps, determination of the control response, assessment of the pump interaction with the DH system, assessment of the pump performance parameter selection to suit the needs of the boiler or the DH system etc.
  • fans (ID fans, FD fans, ventilation fans etc.) to the extent agreed with the Customer, in particular determination of aerodynamic, power and efficiency characteristics of the fan, determination of the control response, assessment of the fan interaction with the boiler, assessment of the fan performance parameter selection to suit the needs of the boiler etc.
  • heat exchangers (such as regeneration preheaters, hot condensers, cold condensers) to the extent agreed with the Customer, in particular determination of performance parameters, mass and thermal balance, total temperature difference, vacuum drop rate,
  • steam conditioning systems, determination of performance parameters, mass and thermal balance and control response,
  • process systems.
